Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Job Description

We are recruiting for a proactive and emotionally resilient individual, who is passionate about empowering young people with learning disabilities. The role can be either full time (40 hours) or part time (20 hours). The role is Monday to Friday.

The role of the Specialist Speech & Language Therapist is important in ensuring that the School and College meets the educational, social, emotional and physical needs of all pupils and learners.

*Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to ensure exchange of information and delivery of a co-ordinated multi-disciplinary service.

*Attend medical therapy meetings and departmental Speech and Language Therapy team meetings and contribute to projects concerning Speech and Language Therapy Service delivery for planning and quality and promote positive employee relations within the department and teams

*Communicate complex and sensitive condition related information in an accessible way to, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team

*Enable others (e.g. carers, family members) to assist in the delivery of effective therapy programmes by identifying barriers to understanding and using highly developed persuasion, empathy, negotiation and teaching skills to gain cooperation and competence

*Write reports and provide written and verbal advice to others reflecting knowledge regarding the management and care of our learners with a range of communication difficulties and maintain case notes that reflect the full nature of the clinical decision making processes

*Develop negotiation skills in the management of conflict across a range of situations

*Deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible

*Form productive relationships with others who may be under stress and/or have challenging communication difficulties

2. Analysis and Judgement.
*Use knowledge to inform sound clinical judgements/decision making for case management

*Make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment, seeking advice as appropriate

*Demonstrate the ability to reflect on own practice with peers/clinical supervisor.

3. Planning and Organising.
*Contribute to projects concerning Speech and Language Therapy Service delivery for planning and quality and promote positive employee relations within the department and teams

*Communicate complex and sensitive condition related information in an accessible way to, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team

*Form productive relationships with others who may be under stress and/or have challenging communication difficulties

*Supervise the work of other staff and volunteers as delegated by senior colleagues

*To provide clinical supervision to speech & language therapy assistants as delegated by the Clinical Lead SLT

*Participate in the provision of clinical experience for student Speech and Language Therapists, including final year and assessment placements (as appropriate)

*Assist in the support of students from other professional groups as appropriate

*Deliver core training on a range of subjects relating to speech, language, communication disorders in to colleagues, carers


The successful applicant must be registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and be a member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists (RCSLT). Ideally you should have experience of working in an educational setting with young people with a range of diagnoses.
